What if we add a Polite voting feature in Netflix?
This is a 5 days challenge for me to find a way to incorporate new features into the existing platform base on a “shareholder’s” proposal. In my case, my task is to add a polite voting feature into the Netflix app.
Analyze the Netflix app and culminate in a high – fidelity prototype that reflects my best path base on research, iteration and test.
My research divided into 3 parts:
- Film creators can upload “shorts” to Netflix.
- Users( Netflix users) can vote to each pilot.
- Netflix need to response and control all the contents.
“How do creators upload pilot into Netflix?” “What kind of content they need to upload?”. With these 2 questions, I did market research. I found a website called Kickstrater. It’s a global crowdfunding platform focused on creativity. Users who back Kickstrater projects are offered tangible rewards or experience in exchange for their pledge. The process for creators: Preparation(contents)-Building campaign (funding & rewards) – Managing(project update)- Post campaign life(receiving funs & producing & fulfilling rewards).
⇒ “What kind of content they need to upload?”
- project description — project title, project category, project image, project video, target launch date.
- Introduce your team — collaborations, team members.
⇒ “Where do creators upload pilot into Netflix?”
In Netflix Profiles, I create a drop down selection “add projects” .
Users of Netflix
⇒ “How user vote?”
According to my online survey only 26.3% of users are interested in a pilot voting feature for Netflix. So I decide not to put this new feature into the main page for better usability & consistency.
⇒“How user see the progress after they vote”
To gain better user experience, I add “Voted By You” section in the “Projects Page”. To give use clear progress and feedback.
For information safety and underage protection ect. Netflix needs to gather uploads and to make sure it follows certain rules and guidelines.
Solution for Creator & Netflix
Enable to let Creators upload shorts. I create a “Create Project” option for profiles. So Creators select to create a project and follows process bar to fill up all the necessary information. Follows by: Basics-Story-Add team-Preview. After Preview all information, creators can submit, back to re-edit or save the project. When Creators select submit their project to Netflix they will receive a pop-up notification to let them know they successfully submit their project and Netflix will check their work and give feedback in a few days.
I create a new section called “Project” beside the TV Shows, Movies and My list. So the user can review all exciting project, like what is hot now(Top list), Vote by you(Voted list) and other projects in different categories. In each project information page, the user can find more information about each project: short videos, how many people vote, project description, casts, the crew and new updates…
Though research, analyze, interaction and test process. To find the best user path inside a the native app is truly a challenge. My learning is testing in the earlier stage is better. I tested with 5 Netflix’s users in my ideate stage, they get confused through the long process for creating project. So I decide to put a process bar in to my design. In the Hi-Fi testing, the process bar guide the user though create the project and less confusing. My next step is to test with real “creators” users.
